María Petra Curiel Ramos (March 27, 1826 – September 10, 1879) was a benefactor to the town of Los Barbosa during 1841-1879, and the wife of Pablo Barbosa and the mother of Timotea Barbosa.

Early life

María Petra was born in the Mesa de Ramos, Jalisco on March 27, 1826 to don Manuel Curiel y Zárate, a mestizo farmer and his second wife doña Juana María Ramos y Aumada a criolla.[1][2] She was baptized on April 3, 1826 by the priest don Juan María de Haro in San Martín de Hidalgo. Paternal grandparents were Pascual Curiel and Francisca Lugarda Zárate, maternal grandparents were Lorenzo Ramos and Josefa Aumada.

Her father, don Manuel Curiel, was the widower of Secundina Rubio y Rodríguez whom he married on July 3, 1800. Five daughters were born of that marriage: María Estefana de Jesús, María Ricarda, María Luisa de Jesús, Juana Miguela, and María Petra.

Secundina died near 1812, and don Manuel remarried with Petra's mother Juana María Ramos on April 7, 1823 in Ameca. Other children of Manuel and Juana were Nazario Curiel Ramos and Cristóbal Curiel Ramos.

Marriage

On May 20, 1841; Petra married Pablo Barbosa of El Zapote in Ameca. On their marriage bond, it states that both the bride and groom where residents of the town of Los Barbosa. One of her sons was even a parish priest at Ameca. With a generous lending hand, she helped to fabricate queso blanco and to give rolls of cloth to fellow neighbors.

Death

September 10, 1879 when she died at 53 and was buried the next day on September 11 in the municipal cemetery of San Martín de Hidalgo.
